William Lacy Swing, general-director for the International Organization for Migration (OIM), pointed out to the fact that, “for the first time, issues related to migration have become a global priority”, despite the fact “there is an incredible lack of political leadership to deal with issues related to migrations”.

Lacy Swing congratulated the European Union and its member States, because they understood “it is fundamental to save lives” and reminded the floor that “migration is not a crisis to be solved as such.”
Migration “is an issue of Humankind”, he said. It is also “desirable” and this is why “we need to implement an “efficient management system when we approach this phenomenon.”
“Instead of building bridges, they are building walls”, Lacy Swing continued. “In the meanwhile, there is a world that needs to be built. A world with Refugees that are drowning in the waters of the Mediterranean waters or that suffocate inside trucks. “These are people that look for jobs and States are not supporting as they should.”
William Lacy Swing, talked during the third day of the Estoril Conferences 2017. He also said we need to educate communities and migrants themselves on their rights and duties. “And we need to more to stop human trafficking.”
“Migration is as old as Humankind, it is part of Humankind and must be taken care of in a dignifying way”, Lacy Swing concluded.

The Estoril Conferences are organized by the Estoril Institute for Global Dialogue, with the support of the Cascais Municipality and of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic. The 2017 edition takes place between May 29th and 31th, at the Estoril Congress Center, in Cascais.
