On February 16th we held the first of an event and conferences cycle that will focus on the challenges of Migration on the road to the 5th edition of the Estoril Conferences.

The room was full to listen to two different panels. The first panel was moderated by the Estoril Conferences Chair, Teresa Violante. It was called the ‘Local Collaborative Strategies for the Integration of Immigrants’  and had the contributions of Frederico Pinho de Almeida (Councilor of Social Action of the Cascais Municipality) who presented the Municipality’s plan for the integration of immigrants in Cascais; Luís Leitão (Superior Inspector Coordinator and Regional Director of DRLVTA - Regional Direction of Lisbon and Tagus Valley and Alentejo) who shared immigration data about the region and Sandra Fernandes who offered the personal testimony of an immigrant, both in France and in Portugal and used her experience to grab a few laughs from the room and was able to identify the several cultural differences an immigrant faces between these two countries.

Then room stopped for a Coffee Break before the second panel took over for a more informal conversation moderated by Rui Hortelão, director of SÁBADO magazine, about ‘Immigrants integration: National Policies and the processes of local governance’ that included the contributions of Teresa Tito de Morais (President of the Portuguese Council for Refugees); Duarte Pitta Ferraz (Professor of Nova SBE University); and Cristina Casas (Coordinator Migratory Policies Nucleus).

This was the first of an event cycle that, until May, will be promoting a series of events that will help increase Migration Literacy.
