Ambassador João Vale de Almeida is the Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the United Nations. Previously, Ambassador Vale de Almeida was appointed as the first ever EU ambassador at the United States.
Ambassador Vale de Almeida has vast experience in the European institutions and in the EU external relations. The Ambassador served as Director General of External Relations of the European Commission, helped formulate and execute the EU’s role on foreign affairs working closely with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, and played a key role on the preparation of the European External Action Service (EEAS), newly introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon.
From 2004 to 2009, Ambassador Vale de Almeida was the Chief of Staff for the then European Commission President José Manuel Barroso.
In 2011, Ambassador João Vale de Almeida was invested by the President of the Republic of Portugal with the ‘Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique’.
